Xite-RB Inspection Light

The original FL5000 flashlight is no longer available.  We do offer a flashlight with equivalent performance (even brighter blue light!) and less expensive – the model Xite-RB of our Xite Flashlight System.

The Xite-RB is not an ultraviolet light – it is a blue light for fluorescent NDT inspection that works with existing fluorescent particles and penetrants. The blue light excites the fluorescence of the materials and the matching filter glasses completely block the reflected blue so that you see your fluorescent indications with maximum contrast. The Xite incorporates a unique flashing mode that makes it much easier to see indications when there is ambient light present.

Flashing mode for enhanced detection in ambient light

As bright as fluorescence may appear when you use an intense light source to view it in conditions of darkness, in most cases it actually tends to be a relatively weak effect that is easily masked by other light. If you try to find fluorescence when there is moderate ambient light (room light, sunlight, …), any fluorescing subject will respond to the excitation, but the response may be too weak to notice easily.

But there’s a trick – by making the excitation light source blink repetitively (a strobe effect), any fluorescence will blink at the same rate, while the illuminated background will not. This flickering increases the apparent contrast and thus increases detectability.

  • Application examples
    • The FL5000 has been used in a variety of ways in inspection environments, including reducing rework bounces, workflow management, pre-screening, and more. The Xite-RB will provide the same functions.
  • NDT code considerations
    • Authorization to use blue light in final inspection is approved by some but not all approval agencies. This article discusses the use of the FL5000 in relation to code considerations.
